How to give your reader's a dopamine hit with these 3 storytelling frameworks

In Today’s edition:

3 Storytelling Frameworks That Will Give Reader's Their Dopamine Hits

The 7-sentence story structure

I learned this one in improv.

It’s quite simple to use.

Open a blank document. Write down these 7 sentences (one per line).

  1. Once upon a time…

  2. And everyday…

  3. Until one day…

  4. Because of this…

  5. Because of that…

  6. Until finally…

  7. And ever since that day…

Here's an example story I created from this framework:

Building a StoryBrand

Here's another framework for storytelling created by Donald Miller, author of "Building a Story Brand".

If you haven't read it yet, I'd highly recommend.

Similar to the 7-sentence framework above, write these items down and fill in the blanks.

  1. A character

  2. With a problem

  3. Meets a guide

  4. Who gives them a plan

  5. And calls them to action

  6. That Helps Them Avoid Failure

  7. And Ends in a Success

Think Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and any Disney movie you’ve seen.

You can fill in the blanks using the framework above.

The Hero’s Journey

The Hero's journey has three main parts:

  1. The separation, where the hero sets out on his journey.

  2. Secondly, the initiation, where the majority of the journey happens.

  3. Finally, is the return. The hero has finished whatever they set out to do and has obtained the object (treasure, love, or knowledge). Now he must return home.

These are the basic elements of every Hero's journey, and can be used in a variety of ways to improve, analyze, and create narratives.
