In Today’s edition:

I just hit 16k on TikTok. Here’s how I did it.

There was no hack.

You know what it was?

You guessed it: consistency & a pinch of strategy.

Here's exactly how I approached growth on TikTok

👇

Step 1: Pick Your Constraints

You want to avoid burnout.

Decide whether you are going to commit to 1 video per day, 2 videos per day, or 3 videos per day.

I took the 1 video per day route. I could stick with this without burning out.

Of course this begs the question of “quality vs. quantity”.

It isn’t this or that.

You need to make a sh*t ton of video content to know to understand what quality actually looks like.

So just get started. The beauty with TikTok is that it’s a low-barrier to entry. Quality isn’t meant to be the best and most videos that do well are made in selfie-mode with an iPhone.

Step 2: The Hook

Just like written content, you need a solid hook.

Most times I just take hooks I’ve seen work on LinkedIn posts and use them in video.

Remember that your hook should answer 3 questions:

  • Who is this for?

  • What is it about?

  • What are the benefits the viewer is going to get?

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Look at hooks working for people in your niche and use them as inspiration.

Step 3: The Value

I’m in the business niche.

So all of my content typically falls into 3 buckets:

  • How do I help people increase revenue?

  • How do I help people decrease risk?

  • How do I help people decrease costs?

Now think of your niche. What kind of content can you produce that will help people solve a problem they have?

When in doubt, I use the following formula for my video content:

  • HOOK

  • Describe the problem

  • Agitate the problem (i.e. twist the knife)

  • Provide the solution to the problem

  • Add a call-to-action (e.g. "follow for more videos on XYZ")

Finally, don’t believe the 5 lies we tell ourselves:

  1. We need a fancy camera to get started (wrong: all you need is your phone)

  2. People don’t want to hear what I have to say (wrong: everyone is an expert in their own personal experiences)

  3. I don’t look good on camera (wrong: you are freaking beautiful inside and out)

  4. I don’t have the time (wrong: you are making the time)

  5. I’ll do it when the time is right (wrong: there is no better time for TikTok than now. 1 year from today you’ll be wishing you started now!)

PS - I have a confession though y'all...

Now that I’ve told you my strategy I have to tell you something.

I had lots of help, too.

I learned from my friend JT Barnett, who has amassed over 286,000 followers on TikTok.

I came to him asking for advice a few months back when I had 1,000 followers.

3 months later I’ve gotten to 16,000 followers after taking his advice.

JT and I discussed putting the TikTok knowledge he taught me into a course and he finally made it happen:

I spent 7 hours going through it this weekend.

After looking through 4+ Tiktok courses, I can say JT has hit the nail on the head.

TikTok isn't just for dancing y'all - it's a HUGE top-of-funnel engine for business and it's still early!
